Bad Poetry for Overwhelmed Mommy-types

Oh, give me a home
where the children can roam
& they sometimes pick up their mess
where seldom is heard
a complaining word
& they spontaneously do school-ish work
home, home with the kids
where the dad has a lot on his plate
metaphorically
'cause I was doing laundry
instead of packing his lunch.

Oh, give me a home
just outside of Rome
where the kids live out of one case
where there's no random clutter
no random junk, just what we actually need
home, home with the kids
where the two-year-old's having a fit
Boy has a sore throat and pink eye
& the girls wait for their personal chauffeur
(that's me)

Singing with St Nick- replay

Jolly old Saint Nicholas, lean your ear this way
Don't you tell a single soul (except the Theotokos and Her Son) what I'm going to say
Christmas Eve is coming soon. Now you dear holy man,
this is what I ask of you; tell me if you can:

Grandma wants the CCHD stopped
I'd like a Douay Rheims
Bunicu wants an easy visa
so he can finally see the States

Father wants the monsignor
to return his calls
The kids should practice Latin-n-Greek
not run around the halls

Big Girl 1 would like a poodle
Big Girl 2 wants another cat
Boy would like more, more cars
who can argue with that?

Big Baby Girl would like a new
wooden kitchen from family far away
She'll have to wait for now
Uncle needs to hit the hay

Bishop & Saint Nicholas
We Byzantines adore
you were a champion of the Faith
We praise your works all the more

Although you're used for commercial gain
we remember your great life
through your intercession now
please help end this world's strife
(my apologies...try to sing to the tune of Jolly Old St Nicholas)

Kontakion of St. Nicholas

...You were truly a priestly worker in Myra,
for zealously living the Gospel of Christ,
you dedicated your life to your people;
you saved the innocent from death.
Therefore you have been sanctified
as one who has entered the mystery of God's grace.

PrettyHappyFunnyReal- pans & pumpkins

Pretty- It only took me seven years, but the cloth that great-grandmother wove, decorated and crocheted lace onto is finally on display. Perhaps it is because I was not born in the old country, but I can't figure out how to do the perfect pleats. But I put it up anyway.

Happy- Haiku for a cast iron pan
cast iron, true non-stick
took me forty years to buy
use metal, not soap

'bye evil Teflon
now I truly deglaze it
browned bits with wine...yum

Funny- pumpkins are perfect for my Halloween season apathy/dislike

Real- Can you find the 'real' in this photo? Yes, it is the extension cord along the back that is powering up the refrigerator. We already had an electrician come and fix the three-outlet problem. Two weeks later, the problem is back on- so it is an opportunity to rejoice that I have electricity at all!

in the mommyhood

If you give a mom a muffin, she'll want some coffee to go with it.
She'll pour herself some.
The coffee will get spilled by her three year old.
She'll wipe it up.
Wiping the floor, she'll find some dirty socks.
She'll remember that she has to do some laundry.
When she puts the laundry in the washer, she'll trip over some shoes and bump into the freezer.
Bumping into the freezer will remind her that she has to plan a supper for tonight.
She will get out a pound of hamburger.
She'll look for her cookbook (101 Things with Hamburger)
The cookbook is under a pile of mail.
She will see the phone bill that is due tomorrow.
She will look for her checkbook
The checkbook is in her purse that is getting dumped out by her two year old.
Mom will smell something funny.
While she is changing the two year old, the phone will ring.
Her five year old will pick up and hang up the phone.
She will remember that she wants to phone a friend to come over for coffee on Friday.
Thinking of coffee will remind her that she was going to have a cup.
She will pour herself some more.
And chances are,
if she has a cup of coffee,
her kids will have eaten the muffin that went with it.

Last Friday, Boy's preschool held a "Mommies and Muffins" party.  I received a wonderfully handpainted flower pot from my son; we sat and ate muffins and juice before his class began. The school gave us cards with the above poem, inspired by the funny book If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. A great half hour was had by all! He is growing up- but Boy is sweetness and light  right now at four years old. We are still working on the whining.

Twas the Night Before Christmas...

'Twas the night before Christmas when all through the townhouse
not a creature was stirring except for dad and his spouse,
the stockings were hung along the banister with care
in hopes that St Nicholas would a second time come there
The children were snoring all warm in their beds
while visions of new cars and Breyers danced in their heads
with mom wrapping presents & dad making cabbage rolls
it would be long before they could take a dreamland stroll

...perhaps next year, I'll finish this silly poem, but for now, we are off to the Divine Liturgy to celebrate the Nativity of our Lord

Rejoice, O Bethlehem! And make ready, O Ephrata! Behold, the Virgin is on her way to give birth to the Great Shepherd she carries in her womb. The God-bearing forefathers will rejoice at his sight, and, together with the shepherds, they will glorify Him in the Virgin's arms.

Giving Thanks & some kid literary masterpieces

apples, baby kisses, cars to get us where we are going, dance lessons for dear big daughters, eggplant dip from the old country, friendly faces, God's love, happy smiles in the morning, ice cubes ready in the freezer, Jesus' sacrifice, kin that have to love each other, loving hugs, mom and the rest of my extended family, nutella, ocean breezes, people who pray, quiet time, really good books, Saint Philip's fast (Advent), tea, undying mercy of God, violin music by Mozart especially, water, x-cellent kids, you who are reading and commenting, and zoos for fun- Those are a few things I am thankful for this day! and now...a poem....written by a big girl

Time to thank, time to love
Happy are we to have people to think of
All our family has come to the feast
No one can be left out of the feast
Kindness is shown to everyone here
Find no one out there
Underneath the table lie
Little children sneaking pie

another version....written by another big girl....

Time to be cheerful, time to get spry
Happy aromas fill the air
All in the kitchen bake pie
Next, bring out the turkey!
Kin and friends are all here
Find your knives, find your forks
Under the cabinets lie
Lingering mice waiting for evening's pie (seems like somebody's hungry)
