Angel in the Waters written by Regina Doman with illustrations by Ben Hatke is one of those read-aloud books. You, mama, will be innocently reading it as a bedtime story to your little ones and then get that lump in your throat. You cough a bit, hoping they don't notice. You continue reading. Then a little something in your eye makes you wipe it. You read on in a slightly wobbly voice.
And then the oldest little one, usually about seven, pipes up: "What's wrong, mama? Are you crying?"
Why yes, beloved son, I am.
"In its mother’s womb, a tiny baby grows, explores the waters, and talks with the angel who is there. These gentle illustrations and wise words tell the story of that baby and the angel in the waters — a story that will delight all young children because the journey from conception to birth is their story, too." Which book makes you laugh or cry aloud....really?
Jim Gaffigan's "Dad is Fat" made me laugh out loud.
ReplyDeleteWe haven't read this one yet- but I love funny books (and films) where you actually laugh out loud (like Thurber, for me)
DeleteThat's one we love, too. Reading it aloud is usually how we announce to the children we're expecting another baby. And then it gets read regularly until that baby is born.
ReplyDeletehow sweet! I love how the drawings are realistic- good for some biology as well as theology
DeleteGayle Formans Just one day made me cry. It really touched me. I had a same kind of adventure and it was like living again all those emotions.

I don't know this one...I love new book ideas!
DeleteThis book made me cry too! I was reading it a few weeks after my daughter was born and I think I had to stop for a minute to get control of the tears. Strangely enough, I went to school with the illustrator, and I recognized his name on the cover. Small world. :)
ReplyDeleteFor some reason that I can't figure out, it looks like this is going to post anonymously, which is not my intention. Sorry about that.
Sincerely,
Beth
On the laugh front, it would be "Let's Pretend This Never Happened" by Jenny Lawson (the Bloggess)
ReplyDeleteI haven't read this one- but the cover is epic! ;)
DeleteOne Thousand Gifts- by Ann Voskamp- makes me cry, but really was transformative for me!
ReplyDeleteShe is such a talented writer
DeleteBen Hatke is also the illustrator for the magazine "Gilbert" (re G. K. Chesterton). There is an article/interview about Mr. Hatke in the latest issue..
ReplyDeleteMiss Rumphius by Barbara Cooney.
ReplyDeleteThinking of the beautiful potential God has given all of us (especially my children) makes me a little teary.
Really?
ReplyDeleteThe Little House , by Virginia Lee Burton. You know: the little lovely house that is slowly surrounded by dirty city and then abandoned, and then moved way back out into the country again....it's making me weepy as I speak. And:
The Littlest Angel--the little boy angel who comes up with a gift for baby Jesus. (But: unlike The Little House, I feel manipulated by this one.)

The Little House! Oh my goodness! Can't read it aloud! ;)
