One of the themes of this blog is the 'littleness' of the Eastern Catholic Churches- especially the Byzantine rite because that is the rite I know best. I wanted to celebrate this littleness with a little giveaway- in time for St Philip's Fast (beginning November 15th). St Philip's Fast is the Byzantine Advent season to prepare for the Nativity of the Lord.
EDIT- read this fabulous post on preparing for the Advent fast. Consider fasting a bit in preparation for the Christmas season that begins on Christmas day (the 'second day of Christmas' is the day after Christmas day, right?)

ReplyDeleteI love reading your blog! As a convert to Roman Rite Catholicism, I've always been intrigued by the other rites our church has. I'd love to win just to find out more. Thanks again for writing and you and your family continue to be in my prayers.

ReplyDeleteAnonymous person that you know very well
What a wonderful idea! I've been enjoying your blog, and still hope to find an Eastern Rite church to visit someday...
ReplyDeleteThat's very sweet of you! I love reading your blog - unfortunately we don't see much of the Eastern Rite around here, so your blog is fascinating! I'm with Kimberlie, could you please tell us more about the St Philip Fast? I'm Roman Rite, but I think the Eastern Rite's approach to fasting is really inspiring and I am very interested in trying to fast more in my own life although it's quite intimidating!
ReplyDeleteI'm a new transfer to the Ukrainian Church (was Roman), and I've been loving your blog!
ReplyDeleteHi...please take me out of the running, long story. But good luck to all the others! :)

I would love to learn more about the Eastern Catholic Church. Please consider me for the giveaway. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteIn a culture full of over-sized cars, packed closets, soaring ambitions and stuffed schedules, the way of "littleness" is often disregarded. But what I love so much about the Byzantine church is the way it cherishes the small, and in doing so reflecting the Blessed Mother and the Child Jesus. It reminds me of Elijah on Mt. Carmel, too, when God comes not by wind or quake, but in the quiet tremors of a whisper. What would bid us think that the almighty and splendid God, the Trinity, the awe-some three-in-one would come to us without the sacred cloak of mystery, the hushed hand of a God-to-be-feared? Thus, the "little way" of the Byzantine - the tranquil reflection, the incense-rich meditation, the hidden life - is fit to receive the grandiose: the presence of God through small things! May we, with st. Therese, the Little Flower, join together in choosing the small -- as Emily Dickinson wrote, "if small - then - all!" Enjoy the upcoming season of fasting and fruitfulness!
ReplyDeleteI think I have demonstrated today how much I need it... : )
